Running in the Rain

by EJ

And just like that, we are in the fifth month of the year with my birthday beckoning. We are almost halfway through 2025, and I keep asking myself, "How did that happen?"

It feels as though all I've done is blink, and hey presto, May arrived with autumn in full bloom and summer is now a mere distant memory. I am yet to organise my closet appropriately and unpack jerseys and jackets, as I should store my flimsy shorts and tank tops. Goodbye flip-flops and hello boots. My linen at present is light cotton, and I know that soon that will not be sufficient, and I'll have to swap it for a thicker duvet and fleecier blanket.

These days, I mostly work from home, so I have chosen to train outdoors in the mornings and fully enjoy the mountain while exploring the many trails right at my doorstep. Venturing into nature has been a refreshing change in comparison to that of the concrete jungle, as all I was doing was migrating from building to building, i.e. home, gym, work, repeat. At first, I was slow and unsteady, and it was more of a stroll, and that's when I realised that when a decision is made, it eliminates any chance for excuses. I kept at it regardless of how uncomfortable it seemed, and eventually my slow walk turned into a steady jog with weights, transforming my routine with each step. With this commitment, I found myself moving effortlessly and embracing the energy that surrounded me as my slow walk turned into a steady jog with weights, and that inspired my morning poem:

Alas, don't refrain as there is no pain

and only glorious joy to gain.

The grace of my face

being swept by the freshest air

wipes away any trace of despair.

Birds chirping, guinea fowls lurking,

squirrels hunting for acorns;

whilst I jog along the mountain's cobbled lawns.

Coruscating colours of autumn leaves are dancing in the breeze.

Each moment clearly filled with beauty,

even as the days grow shorter and the temperature drops in degrees.

Don't freeze and instead press on with ease as to adore is the only duty.

We can find solace in these simple pleasures, cherishing the warmth of each fleeting moment because it's a time for reflection, a chance to appreciate the cycle of life and the vibrant tapestry of our surroundings. As we embrace this transition, we are reminded of the importance of change and the promise of renewal that lies ahead. With every rustling leaf and crisper wind, we are encouraged to gather our thoughts and appreciate the journey we are on and embrace the opportunity to try something in a new lane.

My day tends to flow differently when I exercise in nature first thing in the morning, as the burst of good hormones I receive has a wonderful impact on my energy and my perspective throughout the day. I love running, and getting back into it has been a true blessing this past few months. With the change of season, I am starting to crave the gym again especially the many amazing amenities such as the sauna. I know that as the days become colder, I won't be able to make much use of the outdoors for much longer because today for the first time this morning, I went running and got caught in the rain.
