Actioning the Arts

by EJ

When I entered into the tertiary faculties of academics, I knew that I loved to move and had a deep passion for all that is the arts. The base of my academics started when I was 14, and my family and I decided that I would be better suited to a college rather than a secondary school. I started my National Intermediate Certification with an institution called False Bay College, which is along the Indian Ocean. This gave me the grounding for the years of studying that ensued and eventually I decided that even though I wanted to somehow be involved in Commerce, a Bachelor of Arts was made for me; thus, I pursued it tirelessly.

I was introduced to how broad the arts are and trained in various facets thereof, like music composition and instrumental executions, dance like contemporary, street freestyle and latin, and literature like writing poetry and stories. Through the exploration of this very fascinating field, I found The Martials. It took me back to my childhood when a family member took my niece, Shan, and me to the cinema to watch Mr. Miyagi train Daniel Son, and so my interest was born in The Martials. That day, Shan and I walked out of the cinema an hour or so later, thoroughly convinced that we were ninjas. We begged and cried and pleaded with our family to buy us Ninja shoes and masks and stars and swords. We got everything from different members except the swords, and also the stars that we got were plastic, but we still thought that it was fantastic. And it doubled up as Star Wars outfits because Shan was born on the Fourth, and we therefore always believe that the "Force is with us." My brother was getting ready and in physical form to go to the navy; thus, by default, he became our mentor and most unforgiving, yet comical, trainer. And while our moms were in the kitchen, we joined my dad in the garage as he played darts; Shan and I mimicked him and practiced our aim with our stars by throwing them into a mini wall we had made with all the styrofoam we managed to save.

From there on, I took some of my spare time to dabble in karate, jiu-jitsu, kung fu, aikido, capoeira, taekwondo, tai chi, muay thai, and even krav maga. I have the deepest respect and gratitude for those who instilled in me the discipline that is actioned through the mesmerising martial arts.
