Last week I started wondering what I should do to celebrate my birthday as every year I have a get-together with friends for a brunch or dinner. We've been to Shimmy (now called Cabo), Simons, Groot Constantia, La Perla, the President and Silo Hotels. I usually plan a day out of it with catering and entertainment. You can read more about it via the following links:

This year, I felt for something different, unexpected, out of the norm and that I haven't previously experienced. A search led me to discover that there are the following five free things that you can do on your birthday in Cape Town:

1. Take the cable car up and down Table Mountain

2. Jump off The Sky Tower

3. Go for an hour UpCycle bicycle ride around the Sea Point Promenade

4. Visit the Aquarium

5. Go for a ride on the Big Wheel

I have taken a cable car down Table Mountain many times after a hike up but have never taken it up and down in the same go. I have done the Sky Tower jump, which was an exhilarating plunge to say the least as this is a must-do for a quick fix to get the heart racing and adrenalin pumping. I have never been to the aquarium, cycled around the promenade or taken a ride on the big wheel either. I therefore decided that I would do the four things I have never done before and embark on new experiences.

The celebrations commenced yesterday at 10:30 am, when I met a friend at the cable car station who had a birthday in May too. We were both gifted with tickets, and we made our way to one of the seven wonders of the world, eager to enjoy the morning filled with excitement. The weather was wonderful for autumn, and the ride up the mountain was amazing. When we reached the top, we roamed the paths and found a comfortable rock to chill on with the most magnificent view. We sat there for a while, marvelling at the breathtaking scenery as the sun shone above us, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink on a bright blue backdrop. It felt like a perfect start to our celebration, and we couldn't wait to see what the rest of the day had in store for us. We spent almost two hours catching up, sharing stories, and soaking up the natural beauty that surrounded us as we took in the last rays across the horizon with a happy heart.

After our trip down, we went for brunch at Ou Meul and ordered our favorite black bean burgers, and attempted the beetroot kombucha for the first time, and it did not disappoint. A replenishing meal packed with goodness, which left us feeling satisfied and replenished.

We proceeded to my house thereafter for cake, and more friends popped by throughout the day. There was an assortment of treats like carrot cake, banana loaf, chocolate cake, and vanilla caramel tart. I received such warmth as well as the sweetest gifts.

Today is my birthday and just like every year in Cape Town, we are experienceing the first heavy rain. I was lucky enough to go for a morning jog just before it started pouring. I am working from home and staying as snug as possible while the wishes from near and far continue to come in. The day is bursting with so much love from family and friends, and I am grateful for the many blessings.

Next we will be going to the aquarium followed by a voyage on the big wheel. I'll also try to schedule in a bike ride along the Promenade soon too. I haven't had so many first times in a while, and I think that that is a good goal for the year to come; to experience more fun and usher in as many first times as possible and not get stuck in what feels safe and comfortable at the cost of what makes me feel alive. And, as they so wisely say, "Follow your bliss as it leads to feeling real love."
