Hosting Xmas at my place has officially become a cherished tradition. I love taking the opportunity to explore different cultures, flavours and cuisines. In 2024, we travelled east with an Asian-themed festive feast. For our most recent shindig, I decided to head to the lively Mexican streets.
Leaning into their deep-rooted love for gatherings, bold flavours and community; I wanted to create a similar sensory experience for my guests. Between the rich aromas of spicy food and the warmth of the outdoors, it turned into a celebration defined entirely by hospitality and the sharing of the auspicious occasion together. Mexican activities are perfectly suited to the warm weather of a Cape Town summer. With the drinks chilled and deck set, this is how our glorious day went:
As we dance and gently sway
we look each other in the eyes.
Happy to be together today
underneath the summer skies.
The cactus takes centre stage
and we are excited to wine and dine.
Smoky scents of the grilled tacos we crave
drifting through this deck of mine.
Lounging with all we need in the land
the sun is shining bright above.
Nicky laughs with a beer in hand
our precious circle is made with love.
Manny packs the plates with nachos
straight from the oven and piled high.
Shiela passes ice cold Coronas
we are satiated and far from dry.
Tanya enjoys a warm enchilada dream
spiced and baked to taste supreme.
Bjorn wipes Munich's waterbowl clean
we relax and nibble on churros and cream.
Glasses are filled with champagne
a toast that the day be taken with ease.
Spanish music fills the evening frame
heard playing through the backyard trees.
The golden sun begins to set
warmth remains as night draws near.
Full of gratitude and some hints of sweat
welcome to Xmas in the southern hemisphere.
Thoughtful presents are passed around
a treasured custom that we renew.
This sentimental annual social abounds
with friends so lovely, loyal and true.
Gifts and packaged treats are taken away
as the summer day turns to night.
The lifetime bond we shared today
will always be our adored delight.
The melodies fade and stars arrive
as laughter echoes through the night.
We wrap each other in hugs goodbye
on the deck beneath the soft moonlight.
Drinks are gone and the day overflowed with glee
the memories forever stay with fond cheer.
Until next time, we can all agree:
it's the most wonderful time of the year.
