Hosting Xmas at my place has officially become a cherished tradition. Every year, I love taking the opportunity to explore different cultures, flavours, and cuisines. In 2024, we travelled east with an Asian-themed festive feast. For our most recent gathering, I decided to head to the lively streets of Mexico.
Leaning into Mexico’s deep-rooted love for outdoor gatherings, bold flavours, and community, I wanted to create a beautiful sensory overload. Between the rich aromas of spiced food and the warmth of open doors, it turned into a celebration defined entirely by hospitality and sharing. Mexico’s festive holiday traditions are perfectly suited for the warm weather of a Cape Town summer. With the drinks chilled and deck set, this is how our glorious day went:
Napkins dance and gently sway
we look each other in the eyes.
Happy to be together today
underneath the summer skies.
A cactus stands in centre sight
excited now to wine and dine.
Smoky scents of grilled tacos delight
drifting through this deck of mine.
Lounging with all we need in the land
the sun is shining bright above.
Nicky laughs with a beer in hand
our inside circle is filled with love.
Manfred fills the bowls with nachos
cheesy, warm, and piled up high.
Shiela passes ice cold Coronas
lime tops catching the pure blue sky.
Tanya enjoys a warm enchilada dream
spiced and baked with golden cheese.
Bjorn pours Munich's water clean
as we chill and enjoy the gentle breeze.
Glasses are held high with champagne
toasting that the day be taken with ease.
Joyful music fills the evening frame
playing through the backyard trees.
The golden sun begins to fade and set
warmth remains as night draws near.
Full of gratitude and a bit of sweat
welcome to Xmas in the southern hemisphere.
Thoughtful sweet gifts are passed around
a treasured custom that we renew.
This sentimental annual gathering abounds
with friends so lovely, loyal and true.
For packages may fade away
and summer days will turn to night.
The lifetime bond we share today
will always be our brightest light.
The music fades and stars arrive
as laughter echoes through the night.
We wrap each other in hugs goodbye
beneath the deck's soft, golden light.
The drinks are gone, the day is done you see
but the memories forever stay with cheer.
Until next time, we can all agree:
it's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.
