There is a Sunday option too called the Vegan Goods Market and if you would like to extend your healthy eating into the weekend, look beyond traditional sit-down spots to the local market scene servicing the Constantia valley. On the first Sunday of the month, make your way out to Orpen Road where the Vegan Goods Market sets up under the trees at The Range. It is a vibrant, pet-friendly outdoor haven featuring over fifty local vendors. You can load up your basket with everything from artisanal vegan cheeses and raw treats to handcrafted, cruelty-free wellness products, all backdropped by vineyard and mountain views. Stepping into these spaces, and wandering past the community market stalls on Sunday morning, makes me realise that health-conscious eating isn't about restriction or choking down bland celery sticks. It is about passionate local cooks making real, vibrant food that honours the earth and your body.

For a special treat, the Unframed Ice Cream in Gardens & V&A Waterfront is an acclaimed, modern and highly creative artisanal dessert parlour. The gelatos are exceptionally smooth, small-batch plant-based and raw fruit sorbets. Formulated with a scientific approach using premium nut milks, lower sugar profiles and entirely free from artificial preservatives or synthetic colours, featuring bold flavours like beetroot chocolate ginger. Address: 45C Kloof Street, Gardens and Time Out Market, V&A Waterfront.

If you are into farm-to-table goodness, the Oranjezicht City Farmers market offers fresh harvested vegetables weekly, which I personally subscribe to. Every week different fresh produce is on offer and can be collected from 87 Upper Orange St, Oranjezicht, Cape Town.

It is worth noting that while neither Nü Health Food nor Kauai are strictly vegetarian or vegan establishments, both cafés cater exceptionally well to plant-based diners. Their menus feature a balanced variety of highly versatile options including freshly pressed juices and smoothies. Visitors can easily customise almost any meal, swapping dairy for plant milks or replacing chicken and beef with plant-based alternatives like tofu, beans or vegan protein chunks. This flexible approach makes both spots incredibly popular neighbourhood go-tos, allowing vegans and vegetarians to dine without anyone compromising on nutrition or flavour. This is my frequent personal go-to, as they can be found in or close to most gyms. Both are franchised across the country and are in high concentration in Cape Town, thus making them easily accessible.

Ultimately, this journey is about more than personal wellness; it embraces an ethical approach to food. Choosing this relates directly to the moral choice of avoiding animal products and actively selecting sustainable food systems that respect both animals and the planet. Cape Town has evolved into an absolute paradise for plant-based, health-conscious eating and now, you too, are aware of exactly where the greenest, cleanest kitchens to find true vitality on every plate are to find a bowl of crispy sprouts, a local market vendor and cold-pressed yumminess waiting to be enjoyed.
